Changing your Name
In this country you don't need to legally change your name as a result of your marriage. You can continue to use your maiden name, or you can change it to your husband's surname or you can use a combination, hyphenated surname.
However, if you do choose to take on your husband's surname you will need to obtain a copy of your Certified Marriage Certificate for proof of your marriage. You do this by applying to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state that you were married.
The organisations you may wish to advise would include:
- Banks
- Credit Cards
- Superannuation Funds
- The Electoral Roll
- Insurance Policies
- Medicare
- Private Health Funds
- Drivers Licence and Registration
- ATO
- Passport
- Other places that your hold memberships etc.
The simplest way to handle this is to obtain a Name Change Kit - check out their website at www.newlywed.com.au
